Project collaborators held a round table session at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds on 7th July:

Early Encounters with the Medieval: Diversity, Children’s publishing, and Creative Collaborations

In this session we presented the overall ‘Retelling Medieval Tales’ initiative and discussed the practicalities of engaging with creative professionals and the children’s publishing industry in this way; the ethics surrounding the processes of adaptation and translation involved; and the factors (e.g. disciplinary, linguistic, or curriculum-based) affecting how we can engage with young audiences about race in the Middle Ages and the idea of a more global Middle Ages. Participants gave an overview of children’s access to the Middle Ages in relation to their respective disciplines and locations, covering Spain, India, China, the UK and the US.

Participants: Victoria Turner (University of St Andrews), Rosa Vidal Doval (Queen Mary, University of London), Aniket T. Chettry (Siliguri College, North Bengal University) and Hyunhee Park (John Jay College of Criminal Justice and CUNY Graduate Center).
